What Amazon Merch on Demand Is
Amazon Merch on Demand is a print-on-demand program from Amazon that lets approved creators sell designs on Amazon.com. The company announced it on September 30, 2015, as a self-service program for t-shirts that Amazon produces, sells and ships. Creators earn a royalty on every sale and never handle inventory.
Each design gets a product page on Amazon.com, backed by Amazon’s worldwide shipping and customer service. Creators supply artwork, choose the product type and colors, and promote the listing. The program originally targeted app and game developers.
Applicants go through an application process before they can upload designs. Approved creators set prices within Amazon’s parameters. The account itself is free to set up, and sign-up starts at merch.amazon.com.
Amazon Merch on Demand Features for Creators
Royalty-Based Earnings
Royalties equal the offer price less applicable tax and Amazon’s costs. Creators earn nothing from unsold designs and pay nothing upfront. At launch, a royalty calculator showed earnings per shirt before a design went live. A June 2026 royalty change is reported.
Product Range and Artwork
Amazon launched with t-shirts and later added hoodies and phone cases. The 2015 launch asked for 15 by 18 inch artwork at 300 DPI. Product templates and best-practice guides are available to download. Amazon prints each item only after a customer orders it.
Alexa for Shopping Link
On June 8, 2026, Amazon added an Alexa for Shopping feature that turns text prompts into custom merchandise designs. PPC Land reported the feature routes orders through Merch on Demand with Prime-eligible delivery. It covers apparel and drinkware for customers in the United States. The tool runs separately from creator accounts.
Design Sharing for Shoppers
Customers describe a design in plain language and refine it by typing changes. They can share a link, and recipients add the product to a cart. Apparel options include t-shirts, hoodies and jerseys, and drinkware includes tumblers and water bottles. The feature is free, and no Prime membership is required.
Who Uses Amazon Merch on Demand
Designers and illustrators use the program to sell apparel art without a store of their own. App and game developers turn characters and imagery into branded products. Creators with email lists or social followings can link directly to their Amazon product pages.
Amazon handles printing, shipping and customer service for each order. Creators spend their time on artwork and promotion. At launch, designs reached Amazon.com within hours of submission. Early users included the studios behind DragonVale, Trivia Crack and My Singing Monsters.
Amazon Merch on Demand Pricing and Integrations
The program has a free account and no out-of-pocket cost for creators. Earnings come from royalties on each sale. Amazon’s developer page links to sign-up, FAQs, royalty information and legal terms.
It runs inside Amazon’s own marketplace, so no outside store connection is needed. Sales happen on Amazon.com product pages. Royalties are paid by direct deposit to a bank account. For creators who want Amazon to print and sell their designs, Amazon Merch on Demand is the direct route.
