What Is Perplexity AI?
Perplexity AI is an answer engine that searches the live web and replies with cited sources. Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski founded the company in August 2022. The public product followed that December, as Perplexity’s company history shows.
You get a short written answer instead of a page of blue links. Each claim points to a source you can open. Checking a fact takes seconds.

Deep Research and Labs
Deep Research runs dozens of searches on its own and compiles a full report. Labs builds finished projects from plain-language prompts, including dashboards, spreadsheets, presentations and web apps. Most projects take about ten minutes or more. Perplexity Pages then turns research into a shareable article.
Comet Browser and Computer
Comet is the company’s AI browser with a built-in assistant. It runs on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and it is free. Computer, part of the Perplexity Max plan, works as a digital worker that completes tasks for you. It coordinates several AI models across multi-step workflows.
Assistant and the Sonar API
Perplexity Assistant launched in January 2025 to handle task automation and personal help. Developers get the Sonar and Sonar Pro APIs for search-grounded answers in their own apps. They give programmatic access to Perplexity’s search infrastructure.

The pricing panel below lists current tiers. The free plan covers core answers with citations. Pro suits daily research, while Max targets heavy users of Labs and Computer. Max includes 10,000 monthly credits for Computer.
Companies can choose Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max per seat. API usage is billed separately from subscriptions. Pro and Enterprise Pro seats include a small monthly API credit. Enterprise plans add security and collaboration features for teams.
