What Is Replit?
Replit is a browser-based development platform founded in 2016 by Amjad Masad, Faris Masad and Haya Odeh. It began as a collaborative online IDE for many programming languages. Its stated mission is to make software creation accessible to everyone. Today Replit combines an editor, runtime, database and hosting in one workspace, so nothing needs installing.
The headline feature is Replit Agent. You describe an app in plain English, and the agent plans, builds and tests it. It also deploys the result and manages cloud resources. The Replit docs list project types such as web apps, mobile apps, slides, designs and data visualizations.
Projects are not locked to one format. You can start with a web app and add a mobile app, slides or a video later. Everything stays in the same project.
Core Replit Features
Replit Agent and Plan Mode
Plan mode lets you brainstorm and map a project before the agent touches any code or data. Once you approve the plan, the agent starts building. Agent modes balance cost against capability, from everyday tasks to harder builds. Free Mode covers everyday work on paid plans, and Replit asks before any paid action starts.
Built-In Hosting and Data
Apps run where you build them. Replit provides a database, storage and publishing, so a prototype can go live without separate hosting. The free Starter plan includes one published app, which carries a Made with Replit badge. Starter users build with Lite build, and Core adds Full build.
AI Integrations and Connectors
Replit AI Integrations let your app call AI models without managing your own API keys. Connectors link apps to outside services. Both sit on the paid Core plan, not on Starter. Starter users can still build apps without them.
Collaboration and Mobile
Replit began as a collaborative IDE, and shared editing remains part of the platform. Official mobile apps for iOS and Android let you code and review from a phone. Community Hub support is free for all users.
Who Uses Replit
Founders use Replit to turn an idea into a working demo. Students and hobbyists use the free plan to learn and share projects. Teams use it to prototype internal tools before engineers commit to a full build. Non-technical builders are part of the audience, since Agent needs only a description.
Replit works best for new projects and prototypes. Large existing codebases are a weaker fit, since the platform is optimized for apps hosted on Replit. Review generated code before you rely on it in production.
Pricing, Plans and Integrations
Replit is freemium. The Starter plan is free and gives daily Agent credits, while Core and higher tiers add Plan mode and connectors. Agent usage runs on credits and bills by effort, so heavy builds can cost more than you expect. The pricing panel on this page lists current tiers.
Teams and Enterprise plans cover organizations. Replit suits anyone who wants an idea running fast. Start on Starter with a small project. Watch your credit use, then upgrade only when you need Plan mode or integrations.
